YOGA LINGO: What language was that?
Sanskrit is the language of the yogis. It is common
to hear the names of the postures in sanskrit. Below
are a few commonly used words you may here in class.

Abhyasa: Regular spiritual
practice; discipline.
Ananda: Pure bliss.
Asana: A comfortable steady
posture or position. Poses for meditation and/or body control.
Asanas are the yoga postures that you do in class.
Bhagavad Gita: Literally
translates as the "Song of God." This is one of
the great Hindu scriptures.
Chid (or Chit): Pure consciousness;
the principle of universal intelligence or consciousness.
Pranayama:
Yogic Breathing. The science of breath control. Control
of the prana (vital energy). Regulation and restraint of
breath. The fourth limb of Ashtanga Yoga.
Rajasic: Having the quality
of activity.
Tamasic: Having the qualities
of impure, lazy, dull.
Samadhi: A state of superconsiousness.
Sadhana: Spiritual practice
Sat: Absolute existence.
Sattvic: Having the quality
of purity.
